ABA TARRAGINDI GROUP

Our aim is to support women who choose to breastfeed

The Tarragindi Group of the Australian Breastfeeding Association is located in the southern suburbs of Brisbane. We cover the suburbs of Tarragindi, Annerley, Greenslopes, Loreto Hill, Moorooka, Salisbury, Stones Corner, Yeerongpilly and Yeronga - although anyone is welcome at our meetings.

Our group has informal meetings every fortnight where babies, toddlers and other family members are welcome. Our meetings are a great way to meet other parents, and to share information on breastfeeding and our experiences with parenting. You don't have to be a breastfeeding mother to come along.

At our meetings, we aim to provide you with mother-to-mother support and accurate information on breastfeeding so that you are then empowered to make decisions that are best for you and your family. You'll have the opportunity to hear what other mums did in similar situations and what worked and didn't work for them.

Unfortunately, there is still a great deal of ignorance about breastfeeding, and sadly, many people take on board - and pass on - information that is incorrect, contradictory or inconsistent. That's why it's important that mothers have access to the accurate information and support that is provided by ABA groups.

At most meetings we discuss a specific breastfeeding or parenting related topic where subscribers are encouraged to participate and learn from each other, although if you are happy to sit back and take it all in, that's fine too.

Many mothers find it beneficial to talk to other mothers who have had similar experiences. So even if the discussion topic is not relevant to you, why not come along and share your experience and knowledge with the rest of the group.

Some months we may have a planned guest speaker (eg a health professional) booked to give an interesting talk, while other meetings are a social "cuppa and chat" morning or a meeting in the park.

Newcomers are welcome to attend a couple of meetings and meet other local mums before subscribing to the association, so feel free to come along or bring a friend to any of our meetings.

Coming along when you are pregnant is a great idea. Learning about breastfeeding before you have your baby is an advantage as this can give you confidence when starting to feed. Many expectant mothers find that our meetings are a source of valuable parenting information. By meeting our counsellors and other mums before your baby is born, you may find that you feel more comfortable coming back to our meetings after your baby is born.

Although we specify a starting time for our meetings, you are welcome at any time. Being mothers ourselves, we understand fully that it is not always possible to arrive somewhere at a specified time!

There will always be at least one breastfeeding counsellor present at our meetings so feel free to bring along any queries or questions that you may have to discuss with them personally.

At most of our meetings you can borrow from our Library (books, tapes and videos on breastfeeding and parenting), as well as purchase or order items from our Mothers Direct sales catalogue.

Joining our group can also be a great way to volunteer for group roles which many mothers find valuable in learning new skills or keeping their skills current while they are out of the workforce. Group jobs can include library, sales, treasurer, publications, catering, fundraising, hospital visits, conference and events management, marketing and public relations. These roles can be very rewarding and the skills gained can be an added bonus for some women when returning to work.

As you can see, there is a lot to be gained from a Tarragindi Group meeting. Why not come along for fun!
